Updates from IAU

Dear IAU Friends,

Hope you are doing well. We wanted to update you on some news from the IAU.

It has been a very busy first half of the year for the IAU. We have planning the format for our Major IAU Championships (MIAUCs) for the future years.

It has been a difficult couple of years, for the championships part of the IAU mandate, with several cancellations. The Council has given it much thought and decided that we will alternate the 100km and 24 Hour World Championships as of 2016. These world championships will be alternated by continental championships to provide athletes an international venue to run in, increase competition where the sport is developing and also allow the venues to bid for future world championships. (For example: 100km world championship in 2016 and 24 Hour Continental Championships in the same year followed by 24 Hour worlds in 2017 and 100km Continental Champs). There will be a transitional period in the regions of Africa and Asia giving them time and opportunity to develop 100km and 24 Hours into established events.

This new format will allow the host venues to develop their strong bids and also allow the federations to spread out these championships a bit more given the current economic climate.

Furthermore on the MIAUCs, we have noticed the upward trend of the 50km distance and the Trail Championships. We want to allow these two events to develop with the former being the stepping stone for a lot of marathoners and latter growing in numbers with every passing championship. These two will be organized on an annual basis until 2017 when they will be reviewed again.

On other related IAU matters, this year we will be initiating an Annual Career Award dedicated for tireless ultrarunning enthusiasts who have worked long and hard to increase the profile of international ultrarunning.  .

With respect to this, we are looking for four (4) committee members, one from each of our Areas (Asia, Africa & Oceania, Europe, Americas), to join myself (Chair) and Hilary Walker, General Secretary of IAU, on the Committee to recommend nominations to the IAU Council. Selection will be for a two year term on a first come first served basis.

The 50km Trophy Final (in its final year) is shaping up very well. The latest rankings incorporating all the races for the last two year (2013-2014) has been uploaded on our website. The starting field is almost filled and the field will be posted later this month.

Also, we recently had our IAU Council meeting. Highlights of that meeting will be uploaded on our website in the coming days.

And, lastly we hope that you are enjoying our new website. There are certain sections that are under construction and will be completed soon.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. You can also follow us on twitter @iaunews.

Yours in Sport,
Nadeem Khan
